Some Technicalities About This Site

Copyright Notice

All descriptions and other material on the Ask an Astronomer website are copyright © 1997-2016 The Curious Team, unless credited otherwise. You are free to reproduce any material on this site for educational or other noncommercial purposes as long as you give us proper credit (by referring to "Curious About Astronomy? Ask an Astronomer" or "The Curious Team" as the source of the material and providing the Internet address where it was taken from). If you are using this material on a website, however, we encourage you to link to our original page instead of copying it directly; we change our pages frequently, and this is the best way to ensure that the information you are providing is as up-to-date and accurate as possible.

The Ask an Astronomer website is designed and run primarily by graduate students at Cornell University, purely on a volunteer basis. Though we try to be as accurate and complete as possible with each answer, we cannot guarantee that all of them are correct. The intent of this site is simply to disseminate interesting astronomical facts to curious visitors. We therefore assume no responsibility or liability whatsoever for any accidents, injuries, damage to personal or public property, criminal activity, money lost, or any other kind of emotional or physical hardship that may be caused by either direct or indirect use of the information or advice on this site. In other words, if you burn down your mother's kitchen trying to build a rocket after looking through our pages, or if your project fails because you relied on something you found for free on the internet, there is nothing we can do to help.

Privacy Policy

In order for the Ask an Astronomer team to answer your questions, you must provide a functional email address. This address is used for the sole purpose of responding to your question via email. Neither your email address nor any other personal information (such as your first or last name) will ever be distributed to anyone other than the members of the Curious Team (unless required by law), and then only for the sole purpose of answering your question.

Unless you specify that the answer to your question may not be posted on our site, we reserve the right to do so, but will not post any personal information. We also reserve the right to reword your question to clarify it or to correct spelling and grammatical errors. We do try, however, to leave the questions we receive in their original form.
